Sturgis, SD (April 15, 2026) – One person was killed and another was critically injured following a crash involving a stolen vehicle in Sturgis.
According to the Sturgis Police Department, officers were called around 10:39 a.m. on April 14 regarding a stolen vehicle. When officers located the vehicle and attempted to make contact, the driver fled, traveling westbound on Lazelle St at speeds exceeding 70 mph.
Authorities say the stolen Ford F-250 was being driven recklessly and passing other vehicles when it collided with a white Honda Accord, which was also traveling westbound. Emergency crews responded to the scene and worked to extricate both drivers from their vehicles.
The driver of the stolen truck was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition. The driver of the Honda Accord suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead. Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including the Meade County Sheriff’s Office, Sturgis Fire and Ambulance.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, while Sturgis Police are handling the criminal aspects of the case. Charges are pending. The incident remains under investigation, and additional information may be released as it becomes available.
