Why Vehicles Can Lose Control During Late-Night Travel
Driving after dark can make it harder to notice sudden roadway changes, curves, or debris ahead. Reduced visibility often limits reaction time, especially on rural roads where lighting may be limited.
Speed can also make a vehicle harder to control when a driver must react quickly. If tires lose traction, spinning can happen within seconds and may lead to overturning, particularly if the vehicle leaves the pavement.
Road surface conditions can add more risk. Loose gravel, moisture, or uneven shoulders may cause a driver to lose stability while trying to correct direction. Wearing seat belts also remains one of the strongest protections during a rollover, helping reduce the chance of ejection and improving survival outcomes when a vehicle overturns.
