SUMTER COUNTY, Sumter County, Fla., Sept. 23, 2026 — A man died Wednesday morning, September 23, after a multi-vehicle crash on the ramp carrying State Route 44 traffic to Interstate 75 southbound in Sumter County. The crash happened near mile marker 329 in Wildwood, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the crash happened just before 6:30 a.m. on the entrance ramp. A pickup truck traveling southbound on the ramp struck the back of a tractor-trailer.
The pickup was then hit by a sedan and pushed onto the outside shoulder, where it struck a second, parked tractor-trailer, FHP said. The pickup's driver, a 37-year-old Inverness man, was taken to a hospital, where he later died of his injuries.
The ramp was shut down while crews cleared the scene, according to the report. It is not clear how long the closure lasted or whether other drivers involved were hurt.
The Florida Highway Patrol has not released further details, and the crash remains under investigation. Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased.
