What Determines the Severity of a Freeway Rear-End or Side Crash
Closing speed, not just the posted speed limit, often decides how much damage a two-vehicle crash does. A vehicle merging or braking at highway speed can still be struck at a relative speed difference of 20, 40, or more miles per hour, and that difference drives how much force transfers into both vehicles.
Vehicle weight and structure matter too. A heavier vehicle, like a minivan, tends to push a lighter one on impact, and the crush zones built into the front and rear of most vehicles are designed to absorb energy before it reaches the passenger cabin. Side panels and door structures generally have less built-in cushioning than the front and rear, which is one reason side-impact crashes can cause more harm at similar speeds.
Seat belts and airbags are designed to work together, distributing the force of a sudden stop and keeping an occupant positioned so the restraint system can do its job. Airbags that deploy for an unbelted occupant or at an angle the system was not designed to handle offer less protection. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 17,008 motor-vehicle crash deaths occurred outside passenger vehicles in crashes involving passenger vehicles in 2023.
Frequently Asked Questions
What steps can drivers take to lower their chances of being in a crash?
Keeping a safe following distance, avoiding distractions, and adjusting speed for traffic and weather conditions all help drivers react in time to avoid a collision.
What injuries come up most often after a car crash?
Neck and back strain, usually called whiplash, is common, along with bruising from seat belts and, in harder impacts, broken bones or head injuries.
What usually causes car accidents?
Distracted driving, following too closely, speeding, and failing to yield are among the most frequently cited factors in crash reports.
Does speed change how bad a crash is?
Yes. Higher speeds mean more energy must be absorbed or redirected when vehicles collide, increasing the risk of serious injury even in a short impact.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Sunnyvale, CA
If you're involved in a crash on a freeway like SR-237, move to the shoulder if the vehicle is drivable and it's safe to do so, and turn on hazard lights. Check on anyone else involved before exchanging information, and call 911 if there's any possibility of injury.
Even if pain doesn't show up right away, a medical evaluation soon after the crash can catch injuries like whiplash that take hours or days to become noticeable. Keep a copy of the CHP incident report and any medical records in case they're needed later.
