LOS ANGELES, Los Angeles County, Calif., Oct. 6, 2026 — Two vehicles collided Monday evening, October 5, on southbound State Route 110 near the interchange with US 101 in Los Angeles, blocking multiple lanes and sending at least one person for medical evaluation, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash involved a dark-colored Chevrolet Tahoe and a silver Chevrolet, the California Highway Patrol said, and was initially reported blocking the number three lane just south of the 101 interchange. The blockage grew to affect three to four lanes before crews cleared the scene.

A caller at the site reported a baby was in one of the vehicles and crying, though the caller first declined to request an ambulance. Officials later upgraded the call to a confirmed injury collision, and the child was reportedly transported for evaluation.

One vehicle was reported as not drivable, while a later update indicated that both vehicles could be driven off the freeway near the 1st Street/Beaudry exit. The roadway was reported clear by early evening, with a vehicle relocated off the second Beaudry crossing.

The California Highway Patrol has not released further details on the people involved or the cause of the crash, and the incident remains under review.

We hope those who were hurt recover fully and quickly.

Where Freeway Interchange Crashes Tend to Cluster

Crashes like this one tend to bunch up near freeway interchanges, where lanes merge, split, and cross in a short stretch of roadway. Drivers are juggling multiple decisions at once: who's merging in, who's exiting, and how fast traffic ahead is slowing. That combination of competing movements is what makes interchanges a recurring trouble spot compared with open freeway stretches.

Southbound approaches to major interchanges, such as the one connecting SR-110 and US 101, often experience sudden slowdowns as traffic from several directions converges. A single hard brake can ripple backward fast, catching following drivers off guard. Add in lane changes made at the last second to reach an exit, and the risk of a rear-end or sideswipe collision climbs.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 17,008 motor-vehicle crash deaths occurred outside passenger vehicles in crashes involving passenger vehicles in 2023. That figure is a reminder that the risks around busy interchanges and roadways extend beyond the people inside the cars involved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is distracted driving such a factor in freeway crashes?

Even a few seconds of looking away from the road to check a phone or adjust navigation can mean missing a sudden brake light or a lane change at freeway speeds, where vehicles cover a lot of ground quickly.

How do traffic conditions near interchanges contribute to collisions?

Merging traffic, lane drops, and sudden slowdowns near interchanges create frequent speed changes. Drivers who aren't anticipating those changes are more likely to rear-end or sideswipe another vehicle.

What should I do immediately after a car accident?

Move to a safe location if possible, check for injuries, call 911, and exchange information with the other driver. Even if injuries seem minor, it's worth getting checked by a medical professional afterward.
