Los Angeles, CA (June 23, 2026) – A suspected impaired driver fleeing an earlier crash is believed to have caused a deadly four-vehicle collision early on Monday morning in Los Angeles’ Harvard Park neighborhood.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers were initially called to the area of Vermont Ave and Gage Ave at approximately 12:40 a.m. on June 22 after a vehicle involved in a collision allegedly left the scene. Investigators said the damaged vehicle continued westbound on Gage Ave before colliding with three other vehicles near Normandie Ave.

Authorities reported that all of the impacted vehicles were traveling westbound on Gage Ave when they were struck from behind by the suspect vehicle. The force of the collision left extensive debris scattered across the roadway, and one SUV sustained significant front-end damage.

One person died as a result of the crash. Officials have not released the identity of the victim or disclosed which vehicle the person occupied. No other serious injuries were reported.

Detectives believe impairment and excessive speed may have contributed to the collision. The crash remains under active investigation as authorities continue gathering evidence and reviewing the circumstances leading up to the fatal wreck.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the person who lost their life.

Why Speed and Suspected Impairment Increase Crash Severity?

Speed is a major factor in serious traffic collisions because higher speeds reduce the amount of time drivers have to react to changing roadway conditions. When a collision occurs at elevated speeds, the force of impact can increase dramatically, leading to more severe vehicle damage and a greater risk of catastrophic injuries.

Suspected impairment can further increase crash risks by affecting judgment, reaction times, and a driver’s ability to recognize hazards. Drivers who are impaired may have difficulty maintaining safe following distances or responding appropriately to traffic conditions ahead.

In collisions involving multiple vehicles, investigators frequently examine vehicle movements, roadway evidence, witness statements, and other factors to determine how the crash unfolded. These findings can help establish whether speed, impairment, or other circumstances contributed to the events leading up to the collision.
