LeRay, NY (June 17, 2026) – Two people were hurt following a two-SUV collision near the Interstate 781 on-ramp in the town of LeRay on June 16.
According to reports, the wreck happened around 12:30 p.m. along Route 11 near Fort Drum. Investigators said 68-year-old David Lake of Richland was driving southbound when he attempted to make a right turn from the left travel lane, crossing two lanes of traffic.
Police said Amber Foster, 43, of Evans Mills, was also traveling south on Route 11 when her SUV struck Lake’s vehicle. The force of the crash caused Lake’s SUV to roll onto its side.
Foster was taken to Carthage Area Hospital, while Lake was taken to Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown. Their injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
Lake was cited for an unsafe lane change following the collision. The circumstances leading up to the crash are still being reviewed.
We wish both drivers a full and speedy recovery.
Why Unsafe Lane Changes Can Lead to Serious Highway Crashes
Unsafe lane changes remain a common factor in roadway crashes across the United States. Drivers are expected to check surrounding traffic, use turn signals, and ensure adjacent lanes are clear before moving across them. Failing to do so can place vehicles directly in the path of other motorists traveling at normal speeds.
On multi-lane highways and major routes, even a brief misjudgment can result in side-impact collisions. These types of crashes usually occur with little warning, giving other drivers limited time to avoid contact. Vehicle speed, traffic volume, weather conditions, and visibility can all influence how severe the outcome becomes.
After a serious roadway crash, investigators typically review vehicle positions, witness statements, roadway markings, and any available camera footage. These details can help establish how traffic movements unfolded before contact occurred.
