PITTSBURG AREA, Cherokee County, Kan., Sept. 15, 2026 — A man suffered serious injuries Monday morning, September 14, when the SUV he was driving collided with a semitrailer on US-69 south of Pittsburg, Kansas, according to authorities.

The crash was reported around 9:58 a.m. at the intersection of US-69 and Scammon Road, about five miles south of Pittsburg, the Kansas Highway Patrol said. Troopers said a GMC Acadia was headed eastbound on Scammon Road and stopped at a stop sign before pulling into the path of a southbound Volvo semitrailer on US-69. The semi reportedly struck the driver’s side of the SUV.

The GMC’s driver and only occupant, identified by authorities as a 23-year-old man from Scammon, was taken to Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Missouri, with serious injuries.

The semi’s driver, a 51-year-old man from Walker, Missouri, was reported uninjured. No other occupants were reported in either vehicle.

The crash remains under investigation by the Kansas Highway Patrol. We hope those who were hurt recover fully.

What the Numbers Show on Crashes Involving Large Trucks

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 153,452 people were injured in traffic crashes involving large trucks in 2023. That figure covers everything from minor fender-benders to serious highway collisions like intersection crashes involving a passenger vehicle and a semitrailer.

Crashes between passenger vehicles and semis often turn on a mismatch in size and weight. A loaded semitrailer can weigh 20 to 30 times more than an SUV or sedan, so even a moderate-speed impact can cause serious harm to the smaller vehicle’s occupants while the truck driver walks away unhurt. That pattern shows up again and again in crash data from rural highway intersections where a stop-controlled side road meets a higher-speed through route.

Intersections like these, where a driver must judge the speed and distance of an oncoming truck before pulling out, are a common setting for these crashes. Seat belt use also plays a role in outcomes: unrestrained occupants face a much higher risk of serious injury when a crash does occur.

Frequently Asked Questions

What injuries are most common when an SUV or car collides with a semi?

Occupants of the smaller vehicle often suffer chest, head, and abdominal injuries from the impact, along with broken bones. Injuries tend to be more severe on the side of the vehicle that’s struck.

What typically causes these crashes at highway intersections?

Failing to yield the right of way is a frequent factor, often because a driver misjudges how fast an oncoming truck is traveling or how much distance is needed to safely pull out.

Does seat belt use matter in a crash with a large truck?

Yes. Seat belts lower the chance of serious injury or death by keeping occupants restrained and reducing contact with the vehicle’s interior during a crash.
