SYLMAR, Los Angeles County, Calif., Oct. 22, 2026 — A crash involving several vehicles blocked all westbound lanes of Interstate 210 at Yarnell Street in Sylmar on Wednesday afternoon, October 21, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP said the collision was first reported shortly before 4:45 p.m. and initially involved three to four vehicles, though that count was later corrected to five or six vehicles involved. One vehicle was reported possibly smoking.

Los Angeles County Fire Department units responded to the scene, according to dispatch records. A tow company was called in with two trucks to help clear the roadway, and Freeway Service Patrol crews also assisted before the incident was marked closed around 5:24 p.m.

The extent of injuries has not been detailed in CHP records, though at least one person is reported to have been hurt.

Lanes were reopened once the involved vehicles were moved to the center divider and towing was underway.

The investigation appears to still be active. We wish the injured a complete recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can drivers avoid getting caught in a multi-vehicle pile-up?

Keep a safe gap from the car ahead, slow down early when traffic bunches up, and watch brake lights several cars in advance so there's time to react before impact becomes unavoidable.

What should I do if I'm stopped near a crash on the freeway?

Turn on hazard lights, stay buckled in your vehicle if it's safe to do so, and only get out and move behind a barrier if staying inside puts you at greater risk from passing traffic.

How does fog or poor visibility contribute to pile-ups?

Reduced visibility shortens the time drivers have to see a slowdown ahead, which is why speed should be adjusted well below the posted limit whenever conditions make it hard to see far down the road.

Why does following distance matter so much in heavy traffic?

A longer gap gives a driver more time to brake smoothly instead of slamming on the brakes, which lowers the odds of being rear-ended or rear-ending someone else when traffic stops suddenly.
