Tallahassee, FL (January 6, 2026) – A 59-year-old bicyclist was seriously injured following a collision with a sedan at the intersection of Capital Circle SW and Southern Street during the evening hours of January 1, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. when both the vehicle and bicycle were approaching the intersection from opposite directions. According to investigators, the sedan slowed in traffic before entering the parallel median to make a left turn onto Southern Street. As the vehicle proceeded with the turn, the bicyclist entered the intersection, and the two collided.
Troopers reported that the impact caused the bicyclist to be thrown onto the car’s hood, strike the windshield, and then land in the roadway. Both the vehicle and the bicycle came to rest in the eastbound travel lane of Capital Circle SW, with the vehicle positioned facing south on Southern Street.
Emergency medical services responded to the scene and transported the bicyclist to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. While the injuries were described as serious, they were not considered life-threatening. The 60-year-old driver of the vehicle was uninjured.
The incident is still under active investigation by Florida Highway Patrol. No further details have been released at this time.
Our thoughts are with the injured bicyclist, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.
Bicycle Collisions in Florida: Urban Intersections and Left-Turn Risks
The January 1 crash at Capital Circle SW and Southern Street draws attention to the dangers that cyclists face at busy intersections—particularly when vehicles are making left turns. Intersections remain one of the most common locations for bicycle-vehicle collisions, especially when visibility is limited or right-of-way rules are misunderstood.
In this incident, the collision occurred as the sedan turned left while the cyclist proceeded straight through the intersection—an all-too-common scenario in urban traffic patterns. Even at moderate speeds, the force of a vehicle striking a cyclist can lead to devastating consequences.
Florida consistently ranks among the highest in the nation for bicycle-involved traffic injuries and fatalities. Tallahassee, with its mix of dense city traffic and frequent cross-traffic patterns, poses unique challenges for cyclists navigating high-speed arterial roads like Capital Circle SW.
Drivers are reminded to check thoroughly for bicycles and pedestrians before executing turns, especially at intersections where medians or divided lanes can obscure sight lines. Cyclists are also encouraged to wear high-visibility gear and use proper lighting during low-light hours.
Survivors of these collisions often require long-term recovery and may face challenges related to mobility, employment, and insurance coverage. Understanding legal options and accessing injury-related resources can be essential in the days and weeks following a crash.
