How Can Drivers Help Prevent Pedestrian Crashes?
Drivers can reduce pedestrian crash risks by slowing down near intersections, crosswalks, and areas with heavy foot traffic. Checking carefully before turning is also important because pedestrians may enter a driver’s path from either side of the roadway.
Distracted driving can reduce awareness of nearby pedestrians. Motorists should stay focused on traffic and avoid using handheld devices while driving. At night or in poor weather, reduced visibility can make pedestrians harder to see, so lower speeds and greater following distances help.
Pedestrians can also improve safety by using marked crossings and obeying traffic signals. Wearing visible clothing and remaining alert around moving vehicles can provide additional protection. Both drivers and pedestrians should allow enough time to react to unexpected movements.
