New Albany, IN (August 4, 2026) – A 14-year-old girl lost her life, and three other people were injured in a two-vehicle crash on Sunday evening on eastbound Interstate 265 near the State Street interchange in New Albany.

Emergency units were dispatched to the scene around 6 p.m. on August 2, after reports of a collision in the area. Investigators said emergency dispatchers first received reports of metal rods and fencing scattered across the eastbound lanes. Soon afterward, a crash was reported involving a silver 2023 Ford Explorer carrying four people and a 2005 Ford F-350. The Explorer had stopped in the right lane because traffic had backed up due to the debris.

As the driver attempted to merge into the left lane, the pickup truck struck the SUV from behind. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as a 14-year-old from Fort Wayne, Indiana. A 16-year-old rear-seat passenger was taken to Norton Children’s Hospital in Louisville with serious injuries, while two other occupants were transported to UofL Hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.

Eastbound Interstate 265 remained closed for about three hours while emergency units worked at the scene and the crash was documented. More details will be released as soon as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.

What Can Lead to Rear-End Crashes During Sudden Traffic Backups?

Rear-end crashes often happen when traffic slows or stops unexpectedly, leaving drivers with little time to react. Road debris, disabled vehicles, or other hazards can quickly create backups, especially on busy interstate highways where vehicles travel at higher speeds.

Safe following distance is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of these collisions. Extra space between vehicles gives drivers more time to respond to sudden changes in traffic flow. Visibility, weather conditions, driver attention, and vehicle speed can also affect how quickly a driver is able to stop. When crashes occur on major highways, emergency responders may temporarily close lanes to assist those involved, remove hazards, and clear the roadway before traffic resumes.
