Sparta Township, MI (June 6, 2026) – A 16-year-old boy was hospitalized Friday night after a minibike and a pickup truck collided at the intersection of North Division Avenue and 13 Mile Road Northeast in Sparta Township.

According to investigators, the crash occurred around 10:30 p.m. The teen was riding a minibike westbound on 13 Mile Road Northeast and was approaching the intersection. Investigators noted the minibike operator may not have been using a functioning helmet at the time.

A 31-year-old man was driving a pickup truck south on North Division Avenue. The driver and an independent witness told investigators they had not seen the minibike before the collision. Both stated the pickup truck entered the intersection after coming to a complete stop and was then struck on its side by the minibike.

The teen was taken to a hospital, where he was reported to be in stable but critical condition. The identities of those involved have not been publicly released.

Investigators are still working to determine all factors that contributed to the accident. Our thoughts are with the teen and his family as he receives treatment and recovery support.

Why Intersections Can Be High-Risk for Minibikes and Other Small Vehicles

Intersections often present unique challenges for riders of minibikes, scooters, bicycles, and other small vehicles. Because these vehicles are smaller than passenger trucks and cars, they can be more difficult for other motorists to see, especially at night or in areas with limited lighting.

Visibility, speed judgment, and right-of-way decisions are common factors examined after roadway collisions involving smaller vehicles. Protective equipment, including properly functioning helmets, can also affect the severity of injuries when a rider is thrown from a vehicle or makes contact with another object.

Traffic volume, roadway design, weather, and lighting conditions may all influence how safely drivers and riders can navigate an intersection. As a result, intersections remain among the most closely studied roadway environments where serious injuries involving minibikes and other compact motorized vehicles occur.
