Shelby County, AL (May 25, 2026) – A two-vehicle collision on Highway 119 near Hoover on Sunday afternoon claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy and left three other people hurt.
State troopers said William James Clowdus, of Alabaster, was riding in a Honda Civic when it collided with an SUV. After the vehicles came together, the Civic left the roadway, struck a fence and a greenhouse, then came to a stop. Clowdus was ejected during the wreck and died at the scene.
A 14-year-old passenger in the Civic was injured and taken to a local hospital for care. The SUV driver and one passenger were also wounded and taken to UAB Hospital. Additional details about the accident had not been released at the time of publication.
Troopers continue working to determine what led up to the crash.
We extend our deepest condolences to the teen’s family and loved ones during this painful time.
What Factors Are Often Reviewed After a Vehicle Leaves the Roadway?
When a vehicle leaves the roadway after a collision, investigators often examine several physical details to determine how the sequence unfolded. Tire marks, vehicle movement, and roadside damage may help show whether the driver attempted to regain control before coming to a stop. Fences, buildings, and other property struck during the sequence can also provide useful information.
Vehicle inspections may later help identify mechanical issues or safety system performance. Investigators sometimes review speed, visibility, and roadway layout, especially on highways with curves or changing traffic patterns. Medical findings can also help explain the extent of harm experienced by the people involved. In many cases, early reports remain limited while evidence from the roadway and both vehicles is carefully reviewed and documented.
