Manhattan, NY (July 29, 2026) – A 17-year-old boy died on Wednesday morning after his e-bike collided with a Chevy SUV at Center and Chambers streets in Lower Manhattan, according to police. He had been riding north on Center Street, having recently come off the Brooklyn Bridge, around 9 a.m., when the wreck happened.
The SUV’s driver stayed at the scene. The intersection was closed as investigators looked into which lane the e-bike was in, the device’s brand, and whether it met legal requirements for use on the road.
A riders’ advocacy group said the e-bike involved was not street legal, though such devices remain available for purchase online. The investigation remains ongoing.
