Albany, GA (July 15, 2026) – Tyrian Jenkins, 19, was killed Tuesday morning after the vehicle he was driving crossed the median on Liberty Expressway and struck an oncoming SUV head-on in Albany. The crash was reported at approximately 8:02 a.m. on Tuesday, July 14, in the 300 block of Liberty Expy.

Jenkins was driving a black BMW northbound when the vehicle crossed into the southbound lanes and collided with a black Ford Explorer. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the BMW and the driver of the Explorer were hurt and taken to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital for treatment. Their conditions had not been released at the time of this report.

Southbound lanes of Liberty Expressway were shut down for several hours following the wreck. The cause of the accident is still under investigation. Our deepest condolences go out to Tyrian Jenkins’s family and all those who knew him, and we hope the two others injured make full recoveries.

What Causes Vehicles to Cross a Median Into Oncoming Traffic?

A vehicle that crosses a highway median into opposing lanes of traffic creates one of the most dangerous scenarios on any road. The resulting head-on collision combines the speeds of both vehicles, generating force that far exceeds what either car is built to absorb. Drivers and passengers in both vehicles have almost no time to react once a crossing vehicle enters their lane.

Median crossings can happen for a number of reasons. Driver distraction, fatigue, a medical episode, or loss of vehicle control due to excessive speed or a tire failure can all send a car across a center median without warning. On divided expressways where the median is grassed or unpaved, a vehicle may cross with little resistance, leaving the oncoming driver with only a fraction of a second to respond.

Young drivers face statistically higher crash rates than older, more experienced motorists, and head-on crashes are among the most fatal collision types for all age groups. Expressway corridors like Liberty Expy carry traffic at higher speeds than city streets, which amplifies the consequences of any loss of control. The combination of speed, a median crossing, and a head-on impact leaves very little margin for survival, particularly for the driver whose vehicle initiates the crossing.
