What Happens During Investigations of Fatal Two-Vehicle Crashes?
Fatal traffic collisions usually require a detailed review that can take days or even weeks to complete. Investigators typically examine vehicle positions, roadway markings, weather conditions, and physical evidence collected from the roadway. This information helps create a clearer picture of how the sequence of events unfolded.
In many cases, specialists review vehicle damage, measure tire marks, and analyze data recorded by modern vehicle systems. Witness statements may also be considered when available. Medical findings and other reports can help clarify the extent of injuries and the circumstances surrounding the loss of life.
Because serious collisions frequently involve multiple factors, only limited information is frequently released in the early stages. Additional findings may become available later as investigators complete their review and compile official reports.
