Newburyport, MA (June 27, 2026) – Three people were hurt after an SUV crashed into a restaurant on Merrimac Street during the dinner rush on Thursday evening, June 25. The accident happened shortly before 6:30 p.m. at the Black Cow restaurant.

Police said a 2024 BMW X3 driven by a 67-year-old Groveland woman struck a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows near the restaurant’s main entrance. Three patrons were evaluated at the site, and two were taken to Anna Jaques Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The driver was not hurt and cooperated with investigators. Police said alcohol is not believed to have been a factor. Inspectors determined the building did not sustain structural damage, although the bar section was closed for repairs while the restaurant remained open.

The circumstances surrounding the collision continue to be examined.

Building inspections are frequently performed to determine whether the structure is still safe for occupancy. Investigators may also examine surveillance footage, witness statements, and mechanical factors as needed.
