Johnson County, MO (May 20, 2026) – Three people were hurt in a two-vehicle collision on Tuesday, May 19, at 10:28 a.m. at the intersection of eastbound US-50 and Route AA in Johnson County. One person received serious injuries; two others were hurt with minor injuries.
The crash report states that a 2022 Honda Pilot traveling north on Route AA failed to yield and crossed into the path of a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado traveling east on US-50. The Silverado struck the Pilot on the driver’s side front door. Both vehicles left the roadway and were too damaged to drive.
The 61-year-old woman from Kingsville, Missouri, who was driving the Pilot, was seriously hurt and taken to Research Medical Center in Kansas City. The Silverado’s driver, a 47-year-old man from Warrensburg, Missouri, and a 44-year-old female passenger from Belton, Missouri, both received minor injuries and were taken to Western Missouri Medical Center. All three were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
The cause of the collision has been documented, and the case remains open as investigators complete their review.
We hope all three people make full recoveries.
How Failure to Yield at Rural Highway Intersections Leads to Serious Crashes
Rural highway intersections are among the most dangerous spots on any road network. Drivers approaching from a stop sign or yield sign must judge the speed of oncoming traffic accurately before crossing or merging. On roads like US-50, where vehicles travel at highway speeds, the window for a safe crossing is narrow. Misjudging that gap, or failing to see an oncoming vehicle, can result in a broadside collision, which is one of the most forceful types of crashes a vehicle can absorb.
The side of a vehicle offers far less structural protection than the front or rear, which is why driver’s-side door impacts so often lead to serious harm. Seat belts remain one of the most effective tools for reducing injury severity in these crashes.
