What Happens After a Hit-and-Run Crash?

A hit-and-run occurs when a driver leaves the scene of a traffic crash without remaining to provide required information or assistance. When people are hurt, investigators may examine vehicle damage, roadway evidence, surveillance footage, and witness accounts to identify the fleeing driver.

Witnesses can sometimes provide useful details about the vehicle, including its make, model, color, license plate, or direction of travel. Nearby security cameras may also capture the vehicle before or after the collision.

People involved in a crash can also document vehicle damage and other visible evidence when it is safe to do so. Medical records may provide information about injuries and treatment after the accident.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
3Consider having your case reviewed by a qualified attorney who can guide you through the next steps. They will safeguard your rights and pursue the compensation you deserve.
