Greece, NY (May 24, 2026) – Three people were hurt after a house fire broke out Saturday morning, May 23, on Bancroft Dr. Six people, including children, were inside the home at the time, according to Chief Stephen Andrews of the Barnard Fire District. Emergency units reported that three people were pulled out through windows and a stairwell by fire crews and taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where they remain in critical care.
All three levels of the home were involved in heavy flames, and the structure was later declared a total loss. Andrews noted that fire was visible coming from exterior windows and through the roof during the early stages. No neighboring homes were damaged, and no fire crews were hurt while working at the property.
A woman living nearby said the family had close ties with neighbors and described the situation as deeply upsetting. Emergency units from several surrounding departments assisted at the property due to the scale of the fire.
The investigation remains ongoing.
We extend our thoughts to those hurt as they continue receiving care.
Fire Risks in Residential Homes
Residential fires can spread rapidly, especially in homes with multiple floors and heavy interior storage. Items stored in basements, hallways, or living spaces can block pathways and make it harder for people to move safely during emergencies. Visibility usually drops quickly once smoke fills a structure, limiting safe movement inside.
Fire conditions can escalate within minutes, affecting upper levels as heat and smoke rise. Homes with tightly packed belongings may experience faster spread due to increased fuel sources. Emergency planning, including clear exits and accessible windows, can influence outcomes during fast-developing fire conditions. Early warning systems and maintained alarms are commonly used to alert occupants before conditions worsen. Fire safety guidance often emphasizes clear exit routes and regular checks of electrical and heating systems.
