Portland, CT (June 18, 2026) – Three people were injured early Thursday morning, June 18, after a two-car crash on Portland Cobalt Road in Portland.
Emergency units were called at about 2:54 a.m. to the 900 block of Portland Cobalt Road for a motor vehicle accident with injuries. When they arrived, both cars were on fire, and a utility pole and wires were down.
Three patients were treated at the site before being brought to Hartford Hospital. Additional medical support was also called to assist after the collision.
Route 66 westbound was reduced to one lane Thursday while utility repairs were completed. No additional details about the people hurt were included in the initial report.
The Portland crash remains under review as investigators work to confirm the full sequence of events. We hope the three injured people receive the care they need and recover fully.
Damaged Power Lines Can Create Risks After Vehicle Wrecks
A crash involving vehicle fires and downed wires can create several dangers at once. Heat, smoke, damaged electrical equipment, and blocked lanes may make it unsafe for people nearby to approach the vehicles.
When utility poles or wires are damaged, crews must be careful before clearing the road. Live wires can pose a shock risk, and damaged equipment may affect nearby homes, businesses, or traffic signals. This can delay reopening lanes until the area is safe.
Early morning crashes can also create visibility concerns for approaching drivers. Darkness, emergency lights, smoke, and lane reductions may make it harder to see stopped vehicles or workers. After a severe roadway accident, repairs and safety checks can continue for hours after the injured are taken for treatment.
