What Makes Head-On Traffic Crashes More Serious?
A vehicle crossing into oncoming traffic can create a high-risk situation because vehicles traveling in opposite directions have limited time to avoid one another. The forces involved can be greater than in some other types of roadway accidents, particularly when vehicles are traveling at higher speeds.
Common injuries can include broken bones, head trauma, neck injuries, cuts, and bruising. Seat belts and airbags can reduce the severity of some injuries by helping keep occupants in safer positions inside the passenger compartment.
Traffic conditions can also affect the risk of a serious roadway collision. Rush-hour congestion may create frequent lane changes, sudden stops, and reduced space between vehicles. Staying alert and maintaining a safe following distance can help drivers react to unexpected movements.
