What Factors Are Examined After a Fatal Single-Vehicle Rollover on a California Highway
Single-vehicle rollovers on highways are usually linked to a combination of speed, road conditions, and driver state. In early morning hours, fatigue is a particularly common factor, as reaction time and alertness drop significantly after prolonged waking periods or late-night driving.
When a vehicle leaves a roadway and rolls, investigators typically look at tire marks, the vehicle’s path of travel, and where it came to rest to reconstruct the sequence of events. The number of occupants and their seating positions also become relevant, especially when outcomes vary significantly between passengers in the same vehicle. Roadway design, including shoulder width, lighting, and edge drop-offs, may also factor into what a crash review examines in the early stages.
