Flanders, NY (July 8, 2026) – Three people were seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash on Flanders Road in Flanders on Monday afternoon, July 6. The wreck was reported at 3:40 p.m.

One driver had to be extricated from their vehicle. Two patients were taken by ground ambulance to Stony Brook University Medical Center, and a third was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment.

Flanders Road was closed between Bellows Pond Road and Long Neck Boulevard during the investigation and reopened at 5:46 p.m. No criminality is suspected in connection with the accident.

The collision remains under active review. We hope all three people hurt make full recoveries.

What Happens When Multiple Patients Are Sent to Different Hospitals After a Crash?

When a crash results in multiple seriously injured patients, medical teams at the scene assess each person individually and determine the most appropriate hospital based on the nature and severity of their injuries. Different facilities specialize in different types of trauma care, and sending patients to separate hospitals ensures each person receives the most suitable treatment available. This kind of triage decision is made quickly under time pressure, before the full extent of injuries is known.

Extrication is required when vehicle damage is severe enough to prevent an occupant from exiting on their own. Specialized tools are used to cut through door frames, remove roofs, or peel back dashboard components to create a safe opening for medical personnel to reach and stabilize the patient. The time it takes to extricate someone depends on the extent of the structural damage and the person’s position inside.

Road closures following a serious injury crash serve two purposes: keeping the scene safe for emergency workers and preserving evidence for investigators. Physical evidence on the roadway, including tire marks, debris fields, and vehicle resting positions, must be documented before anything is moved. Once that process is complete, the road can typically be reopened, as happened here within roughly two hours of the initial report.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
3Consider having your case reviewed by a qualified attorney who can guide you through the next steps. They will safeguard your rights and pursue the compensation you deserve.

let trusted professionals handle the rest
