Why One Impact Can Trigger Others in Multi-Vehicle Crashes
When several vehicles are involved at an intersection, one initial collision can quickly push or redirect vehicles into additional impacts.
Drivers and passengers may experience frontal, side, or rear forces depending on where each vehicle is positioned when the crash develops.
Traffic speed, impact angle, vehicle spacing, intersection design, and the sequence of collisions can all affect injury severity. Multi-vehicle intersection crashes may also require additional emergency resources because responders must evaluate several vehicles and occupants at the same time.
