Why Traffic Delays Usually Follow Multi-Vehicle Roadway Crashes
When multiple vehicles are involved in a roadway crash, traffic disruptions can last well beyond the initial moments after the vehicles come to a stop. Lanes are temporarily closed or redirected to allow for vehicle removal and to ensure the roadway is safe for normal travel.
The time required to reopen traffic can vary depending on several factors, including the number of vehicles involved, roadway design, and whether debris is scattered across travel lanes. Roundabouts and busy highway intersections may experience longer delays because traffic patterns must be adjusted during cleanup work.
Even when serious harm is not reported, drivers can encounter significant backups during the clearing process. Once vehicles and debris are removed, traffic flow typically returns to normal, although residual congestion may persist for a short period afterward.
