Bronx, NY (August 10, 2026) – The police confirmed that two people were injured after a three-vehicle crash that sent an SUV over a railing on the Major Deegan Expressway early Saturday morning, August 8.
The crash happened around 1:30 a.m. as three vehicles traveled southbound on the expressway. Detectives said a Kia Sorento in the right lane attempted to change lanes and struck a BMW traveling in the middle lane. The impact caused the BMW to spin sideways before a Honda Accord traveling behind it struck the vehicle. The Kia then lost control, hit a railing, and went over the side of the expressway.
Three women were inside the Kia. Two were taken to an area hospital with minor injuries, while the third declined medical attention. The BMW driver was taken to Montefiore Medical Center as a precaution, while two people inside the Honda also declined medical treatment. Police said no criminality is suspected in connection with the crash.
We are thinking of those hurt and hope they recover soon.
What Happens When a Vehicle Goes Over an Expressway Railing?
A vehicle leaving an elevated roadway can create additional hazards beyond the initial collision. Investigators may examine the railing, roadway surface, vehicle damage, and the direction each vehicle traveled before impact. These details can help show how a vehicle lost control and reached the edge of the roadway.
Multi-vehicle crashes can also involve several separate impacts within seconds. A lane change may lead to an initial collision, followed by additional contact as vehicles spin or change direction. Medical evaluations can help determine the severity of injuries, while damage to each vehicle can help establish the sequence of impacts.
