What Can Cause Multi-Vehicle Crashes at Intersections?
Multi-vehicle crashes at intersections can occur when drivers fail to yield, disregard traffic signals, follow too closely, or turn without checking approaching traffic. Distracted driving and excessive speed can also reduce the time available to react when traffic changes unexpectedly.
Drivers can lower the risk by approaching intersections at a safe speed and watching for vehicles entering from different directions. Maintaining adequate following distance can help prevent a secondary collision when traffic stops suddenly. Motorists should also check blind spots before changing lanes and avoid handheld phone use while driving. Seat belts provide additional protection in a crash, especially when several vehicles are involved.
