STOCKTON, Tooele County, Utah, Oct. 31, 2026 — A man died late Thursday night, October 29, in a collision between a car and a semitruck on SR-73 in Tooele County, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
Troopers responded to the crash near milepost 17 around 11:30 p.m. A semitruck pulling a flatbed trailer with an oversized load had been heading westbound on SR-73 when the driver reportedly realized he had missed a turn. He pulled off onto a dirt area along the road to turn around, according to the agency's preliminary account.
As the truck driver pulled back onto SR-73 to head eastbound, he turned in front of an oncoming Hyundai. Investigators believe the Hyundai driver did not brake before the car struck the flatbed trailer. The Hyundai driver, described only as an older man from Utah, suffered fatal injuries at the scene. The truck driver, also a Utah man, was not hurt.
SR-73 was closed for about five hours while crews worked the crash and cleared the roadway. It has since reopened. The Utah Highway Patrol said the crash remains under investigation.
Our sympathies are with the family of the person who lost their life.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does impaired driving factor into fatal crashes like this one?
Alcohol and drug impairment are common contributors to fatal crashes nationwide, but investigators have not said impairment played a role in this crash. Any such finding would come from the agency's completed investigation.
Where do fatal crashes like this tend to happen?
Rural highways and stretches with turnarounds, driveways, or dirt access points frequently see serious crashes, since vehicles entering or crossing traffic at speed give other drivers less time to react.
What makes a crash more likely to be fatal?
Higher speeds, larger vehicle size differences, and limited reaction time all raise the odds of a fatal outcome. A collision between a passenger car and a loaded semitruck trailer typically involves far more force than a crash between two similar vehicles.
How much does speed affect whether someone survives a crash?
Survivability drops as speed increases because there is less time to brake or steer away and more energy involved in the impact. Lower speeds generally give occupants a better chance of walking away.
