Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes pedestrian crashes?
Drivers failing to yield at intersections or crosswalks, distraction behind the wheel, and pedestrians crossing outside marked crossing areas are common factors, though the specific cause in any crash depends on the investigation.
Does a vehicle's speed change a pedestrian's chances of survival?
Yes. Lower speeds give drivers more time to stop and reduce the force of impact, which generally lessens the severity of injuries to a pedestrian who is struck.
Where do pedestrian crashes most commonly happen?
Many occur at or near intersections, where turning vehicles and crossing pedestrians can be in the same path at the same time, similar to the setting of this crash.
Are pedestrian crashes more likely to happen at night?
Reduced visibility in darkness is a known factor in pedestrian crashes, though they can and do happen in daylight as this one did.
