Frequently Asked Questions
Do pedestrian crashes happen more at night or in low light?
Reduced visibility is a common factor in pedestrian crashes, especially during early morning or evening hours when drivers may have less time to see someone walking near or on a roadway.
What should a pedestrian do immediately after being struck by a vehicle?
If possible, they should move to a safe area, call 911, and wait for emergency responders. Even injuries that seem minor at first should be checked by a medical professional.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
Laws generally give pedestrians the right of way in marked and unmarked crosswalks, but drivers and walkers both share responsibility for watching traffic and crossing signals to avoid a collision.
What can drivers do to avoid hitting someone walking along the road?
Slowing down near roadway shoulders, scanning for pedestrians in low-light conditions, and giving extra space when passing someone on foot can help drivers react in time.
