Townsend Twp., OH (April 29, 2026) – A crash involving a state trooper and an SUV occurred Sunday, April 26, at the intersection of US Route 6 and County Road 294 in Sandusky County. Authorities said the trooper was traveling northeast when he observed a vehicle speeding above 70 mph in a 55 mph zone.
The trooper attempted to make a U-turn to pursue the speeding driver but turned into the path of a Chevrolet Blazer. The SUV, driven by a 53-year-old man from Fremont, was carrying family members returning home from a volleyball game. The collision forced the vehicle off the road and into a utility pole.
No serious injuries were reported. However, the trooper and two passengers from the Blazer were taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution. The trooper was cited for making an improper turn, and the speeding vehicle was not located.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
Our thoughts are with those injured as they continue to recover.
How Improper Turns Can Lead to Intersection Accidents
Improper turns are a frequent cause of crashes at intersections and on busy highways. These incidents often happen when a driver misjudges the speed or distance of oncoming traffic. Even a brief lapse in visibility can lead to a collision.
U-turns, in particular, require careful timing and a clear view of both directions. When drivers rush or fail to fully check their surroundings, they may enter another vehicle’s path. This risk increases on roads with higher speed limits, where approaching vehicles have less time to react.
Staying alert and allowing enough space before turning can reduce the chances of a crash. Drivers are encouraged to use designated turn areas and avoid sudden maneuvers in active traffic lanes.
