Ava, NY (August 29, 2026) – Two people were killed, and a tractor-trailer driver was injured on Thursday morning, August 27, in a collision on State Route 294 near Gleasman Road in the town of Ava. Deputies were dispatched at approximately 7:00 a.m.
According to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, a Volkswagen SUV was traveling east on Route 294 when it crossed into the opposite lane and collided with a westbound single-cab Mack tractor-trailer hauling material.
The SUV came to rest along the southern shoulder. The tractor-trailer struck a guardrail and stopped along the northern shoulder.
The 52-year-old SUV driver and his 17-year-old passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. The 46-year-old tractor-trailer driver was airlifted by Mercy Flight to Upstate Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Multiple local and state agencies assisted at the scene. The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash.

Why Large-Truck Head-On Collisions Can Be Especially Serious
Tractor-trailers are much heavier than passenger vehicles, so a head-on impact can expose occupants of the smaller vehicle to substantial crash forces.
