Mobile, AL (May 27, 2026) – A traffic backup developed Wednesday morning after a collision blocked part of Interstate 10 westbound inside the Wallace Tunnel in Mobile.
The roadway issue was reported around 8:46 a.m. on Wednesday, May 27. Traffic cameras showed the left lane blocked inside the tunnel, with congestion stretching back toward the Causeway exit.
Few details about the vehicles involved were immediately available.
Motorists traveling through the tunnel experienced delays while traffic moved through a single open lane. Additional information about the crash had not been released at the time of publication.
Crews continue working to determine what led to the roadway disruption.
We hope everyone involved remains safe following the morning collision.
Why Tunnel Crashes Often Cause Major Traffic Delays
Crashes inside tunnels can create significant traffic backups because drivers have limited room to maneuver around blocked lanes. Even a minor roadway problem may quickly slow traffic for miles, especially during busy travel periods on major interstates.
Tunnel routes also present unique driving challenges. Reduced lighting, changing visibility, and narrow lanes can make sudden stops more difficult for drivers. Heavy traffic volume may increase the risk of chain-reaction collisions when vehicles slow unexpectedly.
Cleanup efforts inside enclosed roadways may also take longer than on open highways. Crews often need extra space to remove vehicles, inspect barriers, and clear debris safely before reopening all lanes. During these closures, traffic can spread onto nearby exits and connecting roads, creating delays across a larger part of the highway system.
