Why Nighttime Pedestrian Crashes Can Be Especially Dangerous
Pedestrian crashes that happen late at night often create added risks because visibility becomes much lower for both drivers and people walking near traffic. Street lighting, weather, dark clothing, and roadway design can all affect how quickly someone is seen by approaching vehicles.
Roads without sidewalks or marked crossings may also increase danger, especially in less populated parts of a county. At higher speeds, drivers have less time to react when a person enters or crosses a travel lane. Investigators reviewing these cases frequently examine lighting conditions, sight distance, tire marks, and vehicle damage to better understand how the roadway contact occurred. Surveillance footage and witness statements may also help clarify the moments leading up to a fatal pedestrian crash.
