Frequently Asked Questions
Where do fatal crashes happen most frequently?
Rural highways and bridges, especially those prone to icing or limited visibility, see a higher share of fatal crashes than city streets, usually because of higher speeds and less time to react.
What makes a crash more likely to be fatal?
Factors such as high speed, poor road conditions, crossing into oncoming traffic, and the size difference between vehicles involved can all increase the chance that a crash results in death.
How does speed affect whether people survive a crash?
Higher speeds increase the force of impact, giving occupants less protection and reducing the chances of walking away without serious injury.
Why does wearing a seat belt matter so much?
Seat belts keep occupants from being thrown from their seats or ejected during a crash, which lowers the risk of fatal injury in most collision types.
