Why Pedestrian Deaths Often Occur on Busy Multi-Lane Roads
Pedestrian deaths are more likely to happen on roads with several lanes, turning traffic, and limited crossing space. Drivers may have less time to stop when someone is crossing outside a marked walkway or when visibility changes quickly during the day. Speed can also affect how severe a person’s injuries become after being struck by a moving vehicle.
Road design is another factor often reviewed after a deadly roadway tragedy. Traffic flow, lighting, nearby intersections, and pedestrian access points may all provide useful context. In some cases, road markings or crossing signals are examined to better understand how people move through the corridor. Weather, driver attention, and foot traffic patterns may also help explain how these types of deaths occur.
