Painesville, OH (August 19, 2026) – On Monday, August 17, a state trooper was seriously injured when a wrong-way driver struck his cruiser head-on on Rte 2 in Painesville Township.
The collision happened after the trooper completed a traffic stop and continued patrolling Rte 2. Investigators said Jerry Alberico, 61, of Mentor, entered the highway from SR-306 and traveled eastbound in the westbound lanes.
Alberico’s Toyota struck the trooper’s cruiser head-on and caught fire after the collision. Alberico died in the wreck.
The trooper suffered very serious injuries and has remained away from work while receiving medical care. He is expected to make a complete recovery.
Investigators are awaiting the medical examiner’s report as they work to answer remaining questions about the accident. Our thoughts are with the injured trooper as he continues his recovery.
