What Causes Trucks With Trailers to Roll Over on Rural Roads
Trucks pulling trailers are more prone to rollovers than standard passenger vehicles, particularly on rural roads where curves, uneven surfaces, and varying terrain can shift weight unexpectedly. The trailer itself adds length and mass, which affects how the combined vehicle handles during turns or sudden steering corrections. When a driver moves too quickly through a curve or makes an abrupt lane change, the trailer can begin to sway, and if that sway becomes severe enough, it can pull the truck off balance entirely. Road geometry, including the angle of a curve and the width of the lane, also factors into stability. Intersections on state highways and county roads are common spots for these types of crashes because drivers are often adjusting speed or direction as they approach. Load distribution inside the trailer can further affect how easily the vehicle tips.
