What Is Typically Reviewed After a Fatal Two-Vehicle Collision?

Fatal two-vehicle collisions are usually examined through several types of evidence. Investigators may review vehicle positions, damage patterns, roadway markings, and photographs taken at the site. Statements from drivers or witnesses can also help establish what happened before the vehicles made contact.

Road conditions, visibility, traffic signs, and weather may be considered when available. Vehicle records can provide information about mechanical problems or other factors that could have affected operation. Medical records may also be reviewed when someone reports physical pain or requires treatment.

In some cases, toxicology testing is performed when permitted by law. Investigators may also examine available video footage, electronic vehicle data, or other records that could clarify the sequence of events. The findings can help establish a clearer account of how the vehicles came together.
