Why Cross-Traffic Highway Crashes Result in Severe Damage
Crashes involving crossing traffic on major highways can become especially dangerous because vehicles are usually traveling at high speeds with little time to avoid contact. When one vehicle enters the path of another, the force of the collision can lead to catastrophic damage.
Passenger cars striking the side of a truck or trailer are particularly vulnerable due to the height and weight differences between the vehicles. Side-impact collisions often provide less protection for occupants compared to front-end impacts.
Intersections connecting highways and secondary roads may require drivers to carefully judge approaching traffic before crossing. Safety experts encourage motorists to remain patient, double-check visibility, and avoid entering intersections unless there is enough distance to safely clear the roadway.
