Why Wrong-Way Driving Crashes Are Usually So Severe
Wrong-way driving crashes are among the most dangerous types of roadway collisions because the vehicles involved are often traveling toward each other at highway speeds. The combined force created during a head-on strike can greatly increase the risk of serious injury or death.
These crashes frequently occur during overnight or early morning hours when visibility is lower, and traffic patterns are less predictable. Contributing factors can include driver confusion, missed exits, impairment, fatigue, or unfamiliarity with a roadway. Highway entrance and exit ramps are often reviewed after a wrong-way driving case to determine how a vehicle entered the roadway in the wrong direction.
Investigators also commonly examine vehicle positions, roadway markings, surveillance footage, and witness accounts to better understand the sequence of actions leading up to a fatal highway collision.
