Tucson, AZ (January 20, 2026) – A fatal crash early Sunday morning shut down E Fort Lowell Rd in both directions near N Alvernon Way, following what appears to be a hit-and-run involving a vehicle rollover, according to scanner reports and witness accounts.
The incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. on January 19 near the Shadow Ridge Apartments. A dark red Jeep reportedly flipped in the crash, and one victim was found deceased, trapped inside the overturned vehicle. Emergency crews arrived on scene and confirmed the fatality.
Police detained one individual who was allegedly combative at the scene, but initial statements suggest that person may not have been the driver who fled. Witness descriptions of the events and persons involved were inconsistent, and authorities have not yet identified the driver responsible for the fatal incident.
Due to the severity of the crash, Fort Lowell Rd was closed in both directions for several hours while police conducted their investigation and cleared the scene. The name of the deceased victim has not been released pending family notification.
Tucson Police continue to investigate this deadly crash as a possible hit-and-run. Anyone with information is urged to come forward to assist in identifying the driver involved.
