Clint, TX (June 30, 2026) – Two people died, and four others were hurt in a head-on collision on Interstate 10 eastbound near mile marker 42 shortly before 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 29. A silver 2021 Lincoln Navigator traveling westbound crossed the median and struck a gray 2025 Nissan Rogue heading east.

Timothy Head, 78, of Van Horn, Texas, who was driving the Navigator, was taken to an El Paso hospital, where he died from his injuries. Barbra Thacker, 67, of Vernon, Texas, a passenger in the Nissan, was also taken to a hospital, where she died from her injuries.

Four additional people from both vehicles were taken to El Paso hospitals with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. The reason the Navigator veered off the highway and crossed the median remains unclear.

I-10 eastbound was closed for several hours, with traffic diverted south at the Clint exit and east onto North Loop Drive. The highway reopened shortly after 5 p.m.

The accident remains under active investigation by the sheriff’s Special Traffic Investigators. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of Timothy Head and Barbra Thacker.

What Happens When a Vehicle Crosses a Highway Median?

A vehicle crossing a highway median into oncoming traffic creates one of the most dangerous scenarios on an interstate. Drivers in the opposing lanes have little to no warning before impact, and at highway speeds, the time available to react is measured in fractions of a second. Head-on collisions that result from median crossings are among the deadliest crash types recorded on American highways.

Investigators reviewing a median-crossing crash focus early on why the vehicle left its lane in the first place. Medical episodes, tire failures, drowsiness, and distraction are all possibilities examined using physical evidence, vehicle data, and available witness accounts. When the cause is unclear at the scene, further analysis of the vehicle’s onboard systems and the driver’s medical history may follow.

Cable barriers and concrete median dividers are commonly used on high-speed interstates to reduce the risk of cross-median crashes. These systems are designed to catch or redirect a vehicle before it reaches oncoming lanes, and research has shown they can significantly reduce fatalities on divided highways. Their effectiveness depends on the vehicle’s speed and the angle at which it leaves the roadway.
