Robertson County, TX (August 26, 2026) – Two firefighters were hospitalized after their fire truck had a tire blowout and crashed while responding to a structure fire near FM 2446 and Clara Lane on Tuesday afternoon, August 25, according to Blackjack VFD Chief Robert Fowler. Both are expected to recover.
The structure fire prompted a precautionary evacuation of nearby residents, who have since been allowed to return home. Traffic was blocked on FM 2446 between Shiloh Church Road and FM 1940 while crews worked to contain the blaze. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Why Are Tire Blowouts Especially Dangerous for Emergency Vehicles?
Fire trucks carry significantly more weight from water tanks, equipment, and personnel, which puts extra strain on their tires compared to a standard vehicle. A sudden blowout on a heavier vehicle can be harder to control because the shift in weight distribution occurs quickly and affects a larger, less maneuverable vehicle.
Responding at higher speeds, as trucks do en route to an emergency, reduces the time available to react once a tire fails. A driver has to manage both the sudden loss of control and the vehicle’s size at the same time, which can make recovery more difficult than in a smaller car.
Departments generally maintain rigorous tire inspection schedules specifically because of these risks, though blowouts can still occur unexpectedly from road debris or wear that isn’t always visible beforehand.
