How Do Investigators Work to Identify Drivers in Hit-and-Run Collisions?
Hit-and-run investigations rely on a combination of physical evidence and witness information to identify the vehicle and driver involved. Investigators may examine vehicle debris left at the scene, surveillance footage from nearby businesses or homes, traffic camera recordings, and eyewitness accounts. Even small pieces of evidence can help determine the make or model of the fleeing vehicle.
Investigators also review roadway conditions, vehicle damage, and the positions of the vehicles involved to better understand how the collision occurred. As additional evidence is collected and analyzed, law enforcement may be able to identify those responsible and reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
