Southeast, NY (June 3, 2026) – Two tractor-trailer drivers were injured on Monday after their vehicles collided on Interstate 84 in Putnam County.

The crash occurred shortly before noon in the Town of Southeast. According to the New York State Police, a preliminary investigation found that a 2003 Peterbilt tractor-trailer operated by a Brooklyn driver overturned while attempting to enter the highway. The overturned truck then collided with a second tractor-trailer, causing the other vehicle to veer into the median.

Both drivers sustained injuries and were transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment. Information regarding the severity of their injuries was not immediately released.

Several lanes of I-84 were closed while emergency units cleared debris scattered across the roadway and investigators examined the crash site. No further details about the cause of the collision were available.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing. We are thinking of those injured and wish them a full recovery.

Why Highway Merging Areas Can Be Challenging for Large Trucks

Interstate entrance ramps require drivers to adjust speed and merge safely into traffic already traveling at highway speeds. For large commercial trucks, this process can be more complex due to vehicle size, weight, and longer stopping distances.

When a truck overturns near a merge point, investigators often examine speed, load distribution, roadway geometry, and driver actions. They may also review traffic conditions and the positioning of nearby vehicles. Evidence from the roadway, vehicle damage, and electronic logging or onboard data systems can help reconstruct the sequence of events and determine how the collision developed.
