Lodi, CA (May 20, 2026) – Two people died after four vehicles, including a big rig, were involved in a collision around 12:21 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, along northbound Highway 99 near the Harney Lane offramp in Lodi.
Early information indicated that several vehicles became involved near the off-ramp, though it was not immediately clear which people lost their lives.
Investigators said one driver attempted to leave the roadway before being detained. The big rig driver, identified as Manvir Singh, was later booked on multiple allegations, including vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run tied to death or injury, and resisting law enforcement.
The names of the deceased had not been publicly released at the time of publication. Additional details about the roadway collision had not yet been made available.
Investigators are still working to determine the full sequence of actions that led to the deadly highway chain reaction. We extend our deepest sympathies to the families mourning this loss.
What Information Is Commonly Reviewed After Highway Pileups?
After a major highway pileup, investigators usually begin by reviewing vehicle positions, roadway markings, and traffic flow patterns. Weather, visibility, and braking distance may also be examined to better understand how traffic conditions changed before vehicles came together. Commercial trucks can attract additional attention due to their weight, stopping distance, and travel speeds on busy highways.
Phone records, dashboard cameras, and witness statements may also help piece together a timeline. Damage patterns on each vehicle can sometimes provide clues about the order of contact. Medical findings can later clarify the severity of harm experienced by the people involved. In some cases, roadway debris and skid marks help explain whether drivers attempted to avoid contact moments before the chain reaction unfolded.
