Oakland, CA (June 9, 2026) – Two people died on Monday morning, June 8, after an SUV collided with a marked police vehicle on East 12th Street near 29th Avenue in Oakland.

The accident happened shortly after 11:00 a.m. The Oakland Housing Authority said one of its officers saw the SUV being driven erratically and tried to pull it over.

The SUV driver sped away, but the officer did not pursue. The SUV continued along East 12th Street and hit a marked Oakland police vehicle at a high rate of speed.

The officer in the marked vehicle was brought to a hospital and was expected to be OK. The two people inside the SUV were pronounced dead at the scene.

A third person ran from the wreck but was taken into custody a short time later. Additional identifying details about the people who died were not immediately released.

The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under review as investigators continue gathering facts. We extend our sincere condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, and we hope the injured officer recovers fully.

High-Speed Urban Crashes Create Sudden Risks for Nearby Traffic

High-speed crashes on city streets can become deadly within seconds. Urban roads may include parked vehicles, pedestrians, buses, turning traffic, and officers working nearby.

When a vehicle moves erratically, other drivers may have little time to react. A marked police vehicle, even when not part of the original traffic stop, can still be placed in danger if another vehicle enters the road at high speed.

City crash reports may first focus on the number of people injured, vehicle paths, hospital care, and whether anyone left the scene. Later updates may clarify speed, direction of travel, traffic signals, and nearby witness accounts. These details help explain how a roadway crash developed in a busy part of the city.
